8 things you can do

“The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing.”

Human Trafficking is a massive evil that must be attacked from multiple angles.  We need all the Good Guys we can get!  Use this page to explore some of the many ways you can get involved and DO SOMETHING.

Set America's Moral Compass Right Side Up

Mainstream America is reaching new lows of moral decline…from pornographic images being infused into kid-accessible media to shockingly degrading lyrics topping pop music charts.  Our society is becoming increasingly desensitized to the sexual exploitation of women (and children, and men!).  Thankfully people are organizing together to say enough is enough.  Check ’em out, join the mailing lists, support the campaigns, add your voice to make a difference!

National Center on Sexual Exploitation - A leading global hub for education, organization and action to end sexual exploitation.
WeAreUltraviolet.org  - UltraViolet is a growing community of over 1.5M women and men across the U.S. mobilized to fight sexism and expand women’s rights, from politics and government to media and pop culture. UltraViolet combines innovative, cutting-edge organizing with grassroots, people-powered actions to fight for equality and progress.

There are dozens of game-changing laws in need of support– stricter penalties for traffickers and buyers, better protection for victims, funding for safe houses, lower barriers for trafficking convictions (so that, for example, a conviction doesn’t rely solely upon an abused child taking the stand against the adult she’s most terrified of!), protection for legal immigrant workers, and the list goes on.

Help pass these laws by writing letters, attending lobby days, petitioning and more. Hers’s one great hub for all things legislative when it comes to human trafficking: Polaris Project- Policy & Legislation Page

Personally protect "easy Prey"

Did you know that 1 in 3 children who run away from home will engage in “survival sex” within the first 48 hours of being on the street?  The best way to keep a child at home is to have a loving home environment.  If you feel called to be a hero in a child’s life through foster parenting or adoption, check out these national resources for starting that process: Safe-Families.org, AdoptUsKids.org, OliveCrest.org

Hit the bad guys where it hurts: the pocket

There are an estimated 27 million trafficking victims in the world, both sex trafficking and labor trafficking.  Get educated and do your best to support slave free, fair trade companies instead of companies that use forced or child labor.

roll up your sleeves in your local community

Human trafficking is everywhere.  Chances are you needn’t look too far to lend a helping hand to local anti-trafficking organizations. From residential facilities for victims to the Salvation Army (which is very active in this movement!),  there are probably good organizations doing good things in your community in need of good people to help.  In addition to a quick google search, you can use this state-by-state directory to find local anti-trafficking organizations: Global Modern Slavery Directory

spread the word

You have the power to prevent human trafficking for the teens in your life through The Cool Aunt Series.  And, you have the power to create critical human trafficking awareness in your circles… a small family circle or a wide community circle, every person matters.  The ideas are endless.  You can plan a movie night to watch the powerful and informative documentary: Nefarious (now FREE to watch on YouTube!) or plan a screening of the heart-wrenching, eye-opening documentary California’s Forgotten Children.

You can suggest an anti-trafficking book for your book club.  You can organize an awareness event at your local school or church, invite experts/survivors to speak and pass out free awareness materials.  Or, you can just educate yourself from the many great online resources, videos and websites and start spreading the word to one person at a time.  It’s all about sowing seeds.

Report, report, report

One of the biggest sex slavery rescues in the United States happened as a result of one woman noticing that numerous men kept coming in and out of the apartment down the hall.  She called the trafficking hotline and reported the tip.  The hotline gave the tip to the local authorities.  Lives were saved.  She’s a hero.

If you suspect trafficking, don’t hesitate to call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 888 3737 888.  All calls are confidential and the hotline is live 24/7.  You can also text BE-FREE.
